Thinking back over coverage of the Democratic primary to this point, if you kept the debates and town halls, and removed all other coverage of "the race," except for an informational sidebar with up-to-date polling data, what would be lost to democracy? I'd argue almost nothing.
I agree with you wholeheartedly on the coverage approach, and am not here to well-actually you. I do think that Bloomberg's approach was an extraordinary attempt to buy an American election, and the narrative coverage of how that campaign was conducted was worthwhile journalism.

Probably everyone can pick out a story or two that was worthwhile, but when you think of the acres of repetitive journalism, the hours of empty speculation as each new frontrunner or surge-person came and went... Total it all up and the value added is vanishingly small per acre.
