The structural problem here is that too many people who can't find their desired job in academia end up in a holding pattern of freelance journalism. It's the same reason we have so many first novels about an aspiring MFA grad, deep in debt, trying to make it in New York City.

Maybe because they spent their whole childhood being taught that accomplishment and effort should not be judged and that self-esteem is sufficient to get what they want, else their fragile egos be damaged.
