You could argue that Bernie's almost comical inability to change approach is a weakness in situations like he's in now. But even his most bitter enemies would not expect him to change his stripes, or even bend much at all, after being elected. And that's why he heads a movement.

People with a grievance join the Bernie movement because they believe that he will fight for them. But the root cause of Bernie's success is a career spent campaigning on the exact same message, from out in the wilderness, with not much regard for expediency.

Note that the line of attack from Sanders supporters against Warren was always some accusation of duplicity. The candidates campaigned on almost identical platforms, which led pundits to talk about a "progressive lane". But Bernie people were never going to come over to Warren

but why are convictions more attractive than opinions that may change? campaigning is always a mix of trying to get other people to change their opinions and appealing to your base, right? surely the ability to swayable should be a positive quality.

As a Bernie supporter, this is exactly it. He was stumping for gay rights fifty years ago, when it was political poison. A lot of Bernie supporters are former Obama supporters who believed in "Hope and Change," but were given neoliberalism and eight more years of a Forever War.

It is clear the Sanders is fighting for things he believes in, not just making promises to secure votes. We KNOW that the Republican senate isn't going to pass Medicare for All, but we also trust Sanders not to accept a substitute that primarily benefits powerful lobbying groups.
