Journalists in American national politics have a bad set of incentives. "Horse race" coverage gets massive attention and clicks, so editors like it. There is no penalty for being constantly wrong, or not even wrong (Chris Cillizza eats steak every night). Everyone sits on Twitter

I watched how journalists covered Iowa, and the difference between the superb local press in the state and the bloated, incurious, and arrogant national press corps could not have been greater. We need a sensible, well-funded space program to fire them into the heart of the Sun
