I think a key to understanding the dynamic in the primaries is that the Democratic Party is absolutely unified around the need to defeat Trump, it is really the only issue in this election. But there is a deep and bitter schism about what tactics to adopt to achieve the outcome

True but we did try the other tactic in 2016. That's about as close as you can get to the parallel case and the results pretty clearly showed the Sanders approach would work better.
