There is no experiment that could be run. What we have is enormous data that centrist Democrats, the only ones to be nominated since Carter, have either lost or, when governing, created conditions for the opposition party to further descend into extremist reaction.

Many Sanders supporters have political horizons beyond one election. Ask many of us what we truly fear and it isn’t Trump’s re-election (though we believe he’d likely defeat Biden et al) but what happens after a President Biden.

Well, to be fair, no real world test. Lots of simulations show that Sanders (as well as mostly all the current candidates) can beat Trump in the general.
