The reason totalitarianism and socialism are linked, despite no inherent ideological connection, is that socialism has meant in practice the death of political pluralism in the countries where it was seriously attempted. The burden of proof here in a democracy is on socialists.

I think this comes back yet again to 'what do we mean when we say socialism?' Because, in practice, 90% of the time Americans mean 'social democracy,' not 'government control of the means of production.' This mess is at the heart of most of these questions.
