As @mashagessen wrote not long ago, Americans, especially boomers, are so consumed by Cold War narratives that they can't delink totalitarianism from socialism. Young people maybe just want a better social safety net in a world wrecked by boomers.https://twitter.com/john_sipher/status/1234212548410519554 …

The reason totalitarianism and socialism are linked, despite no inherent ideological connection, is that socialism has meant in practice the death of political pluralism in the countries where it was seriously attempted. The burden of proof here in a democracy is on socialists.

There is plenty of political pluralism in Norway, where the government owns 76% of all non-home wealth

Unless government ownership of the means of production no longer means socialism

Moreover, the government has a large stake in most of the biggest firms in the country and has a well-managed system of democracy that makes political use of that ownership in a way that is of general benefit.

I admire Denmark and Norway in particular, but it's kind of complicated. To be honest with you, I need to learn about and understand the situation in Norway better if we're not to just have a dumb (on my side) tweetfght.

Fair enough, but there's an argument to be made that by any metric you can quantity Venezuela as socialist, Norway also meets that metric, and that honestly there really is no good definition of "socialism" anymore, including gov't ownership of means: https://www.peoplespolicyproject.org/2019/01/27/norway-is-far-more-socialist-than-venezuela/ …

I would rather disqualify both countries from the debate since they have a massive petroleum economy. It's like debating the economic value of theocracy using Saudi as an example. It leads to tail-chasing

Which is why I think MLK's vision of a socialist "process," rather than searching for some socialist "end state," is much more productive, and what demsocs like Bernie are trying to bring about into public consciousness. Because then you avoid all these discussions by default.
