I think this comes back yet again to 'what do we mean when we say socialism?' Because, in practice, 90% of the time Americans mean 'social democracy,' not 'government control of the means of production.' This mess is at the heart of most of these questions.

We have excellent contemporary examples of countries that combine free markets, private enterprise, a large public sector and robust, high-quality social services. But if people are advocating socialism, rather than social democracy, then they must face the historical record.
