This is cold-blooded, but I am a downright reptile so I will say it. If you are a political candidate, and your two most successful opponents are very elderly, and there is an epidemic breaking out, with months left to go before the final result, why would you drop out of a race?

There are inviolable political norms about not compassing the death of a rival, but things can be imagined and scenarios drawn up in a campaign room, or in the private space between one's ears, that will have the effect of discouraging any candidate from bowing out too quickly
