This is cold-blooded, but I am a downright reptile so I will say it. If you are a political candidate, and your two most successful opponents are very elderly, and there is an epidemic breaking out, with months left to go before the final result, why would you drop out of a race?

There are inviolable political norms about not compassing the death of a rival, but things can be imagined and scenarios drawn up in a campaign room, or in the private space between one's ears, that will have the effect of discouraging any candidate from bowing out too quickly

Yup, only reason to drop out would be if one of the top contenders offers you the VP slot in return, which in this context would be an exceptionally great deal

SNL nodded to this tonight. I forget what the line was but their Mayor Pete noted that he had the best chances of surviving the virus. I have been wondering about our old leaders, running flat out, shaking hands and taking selfies. They seem like a very high risk group.
