You might do it because you run out of money, or other political calculation, but at a time when we are seeing high-level people in other countries fall ill, does the fact that you have no mathematical pathway to the nomination matter as much as it would in a non-plague year?

There are inviolable political norms about not compassing the death of a rival, but things can be imagined and scenarios drawn up in a campaign room, or in the private space between one's ears, that will have the effect of discouraging any candidate from bowing out too quickly
