We will do much better on both sides of the progressive/centrist divide if we don't treat our opponents as cartoons. The two visions of how to beat Trump are irreconcilable, and only one can win. It will be a bitter task to unite around it for the losing side.

I’ve been pretty leftist for a long time and I think it’s a huge weakness, socially, that we’re so smart and we want to tell people what’s best for them. We don’t realize what an insult it is to pass judgement on everyone and make demands that they do so as well .

I find the interaction between the progressive left and the considerably more conservative African-American community in South Carolina, where Clyburn is an icon, particularly fascinating. Listening is never a mistake, but it's so hard to do sometimes!

I just watched the whole interview and I was struck with how little his positioning resonates with me. He says universal healthcare is a good goal but seems repealed by Bernie Sanders rhetoric. He says nobody wants free college because some people want to learn a trade. Huh???
