Someone called me a tech millionaire, and I got all snippy, but then I realized that I have no idea how to value Pinboard. Do I just, like, multiply earnings by something? Is it the craigslist value of the servers? How do you value a tiny tech business?

I don’t understand, was the disclosure harmful to you, or are you saying not enough people paid attention to it?
-
I mean that the advice to "start your own thing and live off it" made no sense in a context where you could do much better taking investment that was easy to obtain and came without real strings attached

Tough one, I gotta go with "no" (technically) and "yes" (essentially). Speaking for myself: I was a paper-millionaire 2014-18 but only took in $40k of salary. I could say "I'm not rich" but reality is my lifestyle/prospects those years were closer to a 1%er than the middle class.

Lots of tech folks make $200k+ and have options with huge upside on an IPO that is still years off. They aren't millionaires for tax purposes, but seems from the perspective of working class, looking at that person, I might lump them in with "millionaires"

I would like to point out that some of us find accepting that free money ethically problematic and are still trying to do this without it. And could appreciate that kind of post and info. Just saying

This is an interesting thought, thanks for the transparency. The idea of starting a steady but profitable internet thing is very tempting.
