McGovern ran on ending the war in Vietnam, a war Nixon was winding down in 1972. McGovern ran on a platform of social justice, guaranteed minimum income, health care, clean energy, raising the minimum wage, and ending an unpopular foreign war. He also mobilized a movement that was condiserably to the left of his actual platform. All these are valid parallels.
