My simple belief about the first debate with Bloomberg is that it will be a chance for people who had little notion of it previously to see that the guy is 78 years old

There's some good reasons neither party ran such geriatric candidates in the past, let alone had three of them in the pack of finalists. Reagan and Dole, for whom age was a major issue, were both 73 during their final run. Reagan left office in an advanced state of senility at 77

If Bernie were ten years younger, the attacks on gerontocracy would be unrelenting. Unfortunately the Movement is saddled with an equally ancient champion, talk of age is off-limits, and we move closer to putting a nominee well past his elect-by date at the head of the ticket

Having a president die of old age in office would be a humiliation for our democracy. Washington declined to seek a third term (at age 64) to avoid precisely this outcome.

Your reasoning is flawed. FDR died while in office and his presidency was mired with health issues. Was he ineffective? No. Also, as far as cognitive capabilities go, Bernie is doing alright, which you completely ignored, focusing instead on the optics.

I am quite certain that Bernie himself would be pleased to have another candidate carry the torch of his movement, instead of carrying this burden in his twilight years. But he knows, when it comes to elect-ability and popularity, only he can step up.
