In Nevada, we have the unfortunate spectacle of an important primary election being tabulated by a tech company that makes targeted partisan political donations, sells political ads, and who at least two major candidates have threatened to make the target of antitrust action.pic.twitter.com/K39qkNuNgz

Given their centrality to American political campaigns, and now elections, the single biggest thing Google could do to demonstrate good faith would be to shut down their political action committee.

Don't forget any Titan keys that end up in the hands of campaign staff.

I thought about this a lot in 2018. In your estimation, what's the threat model of a malicious U2F key?

Some of these are government scale threats; bear with me. 1. Cloning of the key. Take staffer for drinks, sticky fingered maid, etc. Several talks on cloning of these keys. 2. Replacement of U2F with a blank U2F with additional payload. E.g., works as U2F + tricky payload.

(User would try their key and be like "oh I need to re-enroll"). 3. (2), but supply chain attacks/interception. Bribed employees in the factory, or interception mid-stream in the mail. Most U2F keys assert they are tamper resistant, but....

Aren't all of these somewhat baroque complications on the easier "give staffer a USB stick with malware" attack?

For sure that one is a lot simpler, but (I know this is not a typical election), endpoint policies can turn off random USB devices as options. Or education can work about not doing this. Or even they could be using Chromebooks.

But the USB device thing is a threat which exists more or less in parallel to the threat model of security keys. Obviously you focus on the low hanging fruit first -- which is why I am an enthusiastic endorser of them. But you wanted to know threat models.

I do—I tried in vain to come up with any that involved a malicious security key in a campaign context, and couldn't be done much more easily by alternative methods, but maybe that's just my failure of imagination.

If you told me we had to attack U2F keys, it would be interception via the mail + lab to install payload on it. Basically undetectable, and something within the power and remit of the various large countries. But you are completely right this is a remote threat.
