I am a fanatically anti-Communist refugee from the former eastern bloc and completely agree with what Sanders and his wife said here. The Moscow metro is pretty! Youth programs in the USSR were nice! This is an attack attempt so shoddy it could only have been made in America. https://twitter.com/lindyli/status/1228717543105454089 …

At least go after the Soviets for calling chess a sport and making the players wear track suits!

I also have no idea why "lavishing praise on communist Russia" is an unforgiveable sin, while lavishing praise on postcommunist Russia, ruled by the same people, is a Presidential virtue.

How about... neither? We shouldn't look to either Russia as a model for what our country should be. Anyone who has a history of waxing poetic about either should probably not be rewarded with power.

I'm not particularly enthused by any candidate running, but there are others (even one I'd consider a solid progressive, if that's one's preference) without a history of talking up the virtues of dictatorial regimes as some sort of model.

And - from a pure realpolitik perspective - it's Not A Good Look™ to an electorate that has even a cursory understanding of the Cold War. Bernie's past squishiness regarding Castro alone could lose Democrats Florida's 29 electoral votes.

The video is a brief clip from a 1988 discussion of a trip to Russia. I don't see what you can reasonably demand of Sanders here—that he have no past at all?

He has a right to his past, but it doesn't exist in a vacuum. He has made other questionable comments (about Venezuela, Cuba under Castro, etc) and it's fair to consider what they say in aggregate about his governing philosophy and/or electability.

If he were the only person potentially going up against Trump, that'd be one thing, but there are still other options. If there is a time to be picky, it's now.

I agree with you on this. But I think the phenomenon of waving the bloody shirt in the form of 20 second decontextualized video clips on Twitter (like we saw with Bloomberg and Sanders today) is destructive and will lead only to drama and strife
