An interesting twist on this story is that Antarctica has a far more complicated coupling to climate than the Arctic. For example, warming seems to lead to more Antarctic sea ice production. A few years ago, a semi-scientific climate expedition got trapped in sea ice in the East Antarctic (something I wrote about: https://idlewords.com/2019/07/the_stranding_of_the_mv_shokalskiy.htm …), leading to unending ridicule by climate change denialists. So it's unusual to see a straight-up "Antarctica is hot today" story

The ozone hole (remember that?) also had a significant impact on Antarctic climate. There's no question that climate change affects the place, but it is complicated in a way the story in the Arctic is not. Truly it is the hipster polar region
