LOTR is not, well written prose and yet

Is LOTR a different thing from the Hobbit or is the Hobbit the first book of LOTR?

the hobbit is a children's book part of the reason LOTR is not, great, is it started as a honest children's book sequel to The Hobbit and then it kept growing and growing, and Tolkien would write himself into a corner, and _throw the whole fucking thing away_, and start over

I think I love it? I can’t remember if I tweeted or texted that it’s comforting to read something that has been more thoroughly thought through than, like, the future of the US.

oh yeah that's the saving grace of all of Tolkien's work: even if the narrative structure is lacking, the _world_ is the most thought-through mythos we (have? had? will ever have?) seen, and so you don't really care about bombadill or the eagles or whatever

… which is why Wikipedia pages about Middle Earth are more enjoyable to read than LOTR itself is, even if it does get pretty close to Midichlorians at points.

Honestly the post-LOTR Christopher Tolkein stuff like the Silmarillion is more interesting to me than the LOTR itself for this same reason; also, from Wiki reading, I strongly suspect the underlying stories are more interesting than the LOTR story, which is not that great.
