I’m told Tom Bombadil is polarizing but I can’t see how he’s any sillier or more pointless than anything else in this universe.

It also seems like he’s providing some information? There is something that remembers a time before the Dark One. There’s someone who is immune to the magic of the ring. Seems...as relevant as anything?

The problem is the character is an overpowered one-off who is dropped in the text to serve a specific narrative purpose and doesn't come up again, despite his very relevant powers. It's like Superman appearing in an episode of the Smurfs with no explanation or comment

That said, if I was a god-like being dropped in to a Tolkien story I would get the hell out of the text as soon as I could, so in that narrow sense he's the only relatable character in the ten million pages Tolkien wrote
