The evidence is pretty overwhelming that door knocking just isn't useful for Federal campaigns. We tried this in 2018 too, funding some of the best-organized field teams in the country, and got a null result.https://twitter.com/dcg1114/status/1227449293281415168 …

This is my town: we started knocking on doors in May convinced that personal persuasion was powerful. We knocked on these doors for 10 months, and the staff and volunteers were committed and worked like hell. We got 308 votes. Politics will break your heart. pic.twitter.com/4wDGSbaYeq

As someone who worked the 2019 GE doing mobilisation: 1. I'm really not sure anyone thinks in terms of "I could do an extra shift at work and donate the cash, or go doorknocking instead". It assumes shift work + opportunity cost, and skips that people often enjoy volunteering.

      2. While fundraising isn't something I have experience with, you can definitely get someone to be a regular volunteer and show up more often, as I've both been the volunteer, as the person working to get the volunteers + get them to be regular.

As a fundraiser, the presence of energized volunteers on the campaign (who tend to be either young or supervolunteer retired people) makes it infinitely easier to ask people for money. It creates a tangible group of sympathetic people to fundraise for, rather than a spreadsheet

Good point. Also, "supervolunteer retired people" wasn't a term I'd ever conceived of before, but I know 100% the people you're talking about and can confirm that we have them in the UK and I love them.

Also, while we absolutely pitch volunteering in terms of making an electoral difference, a huge part of what gets people to keep doing it is the social side of spending time with people you share values with, doing something that makes you feel useful. Donations suck at that.
