POLL: what does the "check" in "check your privilege" mean?

I usually hear "check your priv" as a signal that someone has said/done something dumb probably unaware that their privilege enables that phrase/action. I don't think anyone is expecting you to immediately "give up" (hand over) your privilege, as if that were even possible.

See, I understood it the opposite way. You put aside your privilege for the moment and try to see things through different eyes.

Your privilege is a social phenomenon, so it's not yours to check in this sense.
