In other words, if negative attacks are so harmful on a candidate that we have to avoid them like wildfire, maybe that isn't the person to nominate to run against the President (himself the product of a very long, acrimonious primary)

not only do we need to differentiate among the candidates, but most voters aren't going to remember anything said during the primaries after September. Unless they plan to write a book.

seems weird to me that it also implies that other candidates have apparently run completely clean campaigns and never said anything negative about one another ever, and that's how it's either always been or should be? It's literally the primaries
