The evidence is pretty overwhelming that door knocking just isn't useful for Federal campaigns. We tried this in 2018 too, funding some of the best-organized field teams in the country, and got a null result.https://twitter.com/dcg1114/status/1227449293281415168 …

This is my town: we started knocking on doors in May convinced that personal persuasion was powerful. We knocked on these doors for 10 months, and the staff and volunteers were committed and worked like hell. We got 308 votes. Politics will break your heart. pic.twitter.com/4wDGSbaYeq

There’s a political science literature on this, suggesting that personal canvassing works - https://isps.yale.edu/sites/default/files/publication/2012/12/ISPS00-001.pdf …. Unfortunately, everyone has read it, so that efforts, like much else in political campaigns, likely cancel each other out.

This exactly. The research suggests that canvassing is, in fact, the most effective way of turning out voters. BUT! It's only going to matter if the race is very close AND you have a good core of volunteers. See for example Green and Gerberhttps://www.brookings.edu/book/get-out-the-vote-2/ …

      Don't confound turnout and persuasion

Talking people into coming out to vote is a form of persuasion, but I see your point. The evidence that you can change set minds is very low, which is why campaigns target certain types of people.

Yes, but getting people out to vote is a different thing than getting them to vote for your person. For all I know it is much more effective, and it's a much easier conversation at the door. I should have been more precise that I'm talking about persuasion, not turnout
