Resistance pro tip: there are never waves of principled resignations https://twitter.com/Susan_Hennessey/status/1226556397007011842 …

Any bad organization you can think of (Google, DHS, Reptilian Council) is full of people who think it is better to have good people like them pushing quietly for change from within, and who are holding their resignations for when it gets real bad. And they'll stay there forever.

(For the record, I'm not even a fan of principled resignations. I'm a fan of making them fire you for sticking to their own stated values)

My apologies to the Reptilian Council for comparing them to Google. That was cold-blooded of me

This argument isn't even one about people being venal and cynical. If you work at a big evil organization, the people you know there firsthand are likely to be good people! You don't want to let the fellow stormtroopers down when you know they struggle with their own moral qualms

If you do something principled to break with the group, you're not only doing something difficult for yourself, but making your colleagues, whom you like, look bad for their inaction. They won't forgive you. That's why I have so much respect for people like Romney or Vindman

In 2016, I watched many in the tech industry pinky-swear that they would resign if the Trump administration crossed red lines that it has since crossed. These were principled, caring people, which makes me believe the organizational and psychological pressures are irresistible

I can be a loudmouth and a scold because I don't have to make the hard decisions, not working at one of these companies. Then again, I chose not to work at the big tech companies precisely so I could be a loudmouth and a scold

There is a fascinating optical phenomenon with moral red lines, they will recede just as you approach them
