Have two or three states all go first on the same day and make sure that their populations, as a collective, are fairly representative. Also use ranked choice voting, and then have the 47 other states all vote a week or two later.

Maryland would be not bad. It has more Black and Hispanic voters than the US population overall, but the proportions roughly match those of the Democratic coalition specifically (30% Black, 20% other POC, the rest white people evenly split between leftys and moderates).
