I am sad because the Touch Bar on my expensive laptop, a thing I never use, is flickering nonstop and will no doubt require an expensive repair. The only way to control volume or brightness is to poke at it by guesswork. This thing is the laptop equivalent of a car touch screen

Lenovo Thinkpad series is still my favorite, if Mac is in your price range then an X1 carbon should be as well. I've heard from other good options but nothing else I can speak with experience on.

Dell XPS 15 now that they moved the camera to a reasonable place. Windows 10 Pro with WSL2 makes dev easy for most.

Surface Laptop 3 is very good, and pretty directly comparable to a MacBook Pro unless you have a very GPU-heavy workload. (n.b.: I'm biased.)

if you do have a GPU heavy workload, or you just like ripping your screen off and watching people freak out, Surface Book is *excellent * and more like MB Pro

ThinkPad line (T470/480/490) is kinda nice. That's our developer machine spec at work because it's sturdy and almost any part can be replaced on-site by Lenovo. I heard good things about the X1 Carbon, too.

They're all garbage. I bought and returned a couple trying to give up on Apple; came back when they introduced the 16" MBP (which is great)

The one I have is a replacement for a dead keyboard one. I'd look at the 16" model, but it's too big for my needs (a travel laptop)
