yup - there's probably a point beyond which this effect applies. like, as long as the center holds, extremism is disincentivized, once it's broken, woof.

this isn't always a good thing obviously because the center is often a bad position to begin with. but man, it's hard to see a way back without a resetting crisis

How to capture this center without descending into insipid centrism is the thing that has been obsessing me. The Bernie people kind of take an easy way out ("there's this whole OTHER group of people who we will mobilize"), but if you don't accept that analysis, it is very hard
