Otherwise intelligent people aren't thinking through the political shitshow and ensuing Republican wave election that would result from removing a president by non-electoral means in a fairly evenly divided country. The Republican arguments on divisiveness are unfortunately righthttps://twitter.com/ezraklein/status/1223319722965577729 …

It is important to notice that every politician in the country who is campaigning in a contested district, whether they are Republican or Democrat, is talking about an end to partisan rancor. This is an important political signal even if it drives you nuts, because it's unfair

The majority of people in this country support removal. Even Fox News polls show that

I'm not sure 2) has actually been accomplished though. Bolton's testimony before the Senate as well as getting the defense's lead counsel on record saying he was in on the whole thing might be a bit different for many people.

there *was* a political argument in the House for impeachment, to unbalance Trump & keep the general hum of corruption top of the news cycle. The political failures were when the House a) voted then b) sent articles to the Senate

Whether 2) is true in any degree remains to be seen. Everyone was saying the Kavanaugh hearings were a failure but look at how 2018 elections actually turned out.
