That said, the direction the industry seems to be moving in is baking the second factor into devices, rather than having a separate small object to carry to prove ID. I think this is regrettable, and hope usability work on security tokens pushes back on the trend.

Just having them in proximity would be fine from my point of view. The goal being to have the identity thing a universal across devices, but separate from those devices.
