This is really cool. I've always hoped security keys could become a fun fashion thing (like USB sticks did) to encourage adoption, rather than the nerdiest possible looking piece of hardware to put on your keychain. This is a step in that direction!https://twitter.com/mrisher/status/1222946700387479552 …

Google loves security keys, and today announced an open source implementation to help spur further innovation from the security research community 1/ https://security.googleblog.com/2020/01/say-hello-to-opensk-fully-open-source.html ….

That said, the direction the industry seems to be moving in is baking the second factor into devices, rather than having a separate small object to carry to prove ID. I think this is regrettable, and hope usability work on security tokens pushes back on the trend.

I think one problem with the keyfob objects is that ports are going away on phones. There will soon be nothing to plug them into.

Just having them in proximity would be fine from my point of view. The goal being to have the identity thing a universal across devices, but separate from those devices.

That’s exactly what I was about to say. Apple Watch as a proxy to unlock your Mac works terrifically well by proximity.

It works through the floor from my bedroom to my office, and my kids have discovered this.
