This is really cool. I've always hoped security keys could become a fun fashion thing (like USB sticks did) to encourage adoption, rather than the nerdiest possible looking piece of hardware to put on your keychain. This is a step in that direction!https://twitter.com/mrisher/status/1222946700387479552 …

You don't want the thing that unlocks all your online accounts to also be a tracking device that you carry with you everywhere. That's your phone's job!

I think one problem with the keyfob objects is that ports are going away on phones. There will soon be nothing to plug them into.
-
Just having them in proximity would be fine from my point of view. The goal being to have the identity thing a universal across devices, but separate from those devices.

In my mind, the fact that everyone has these devices means that they’re more likely to end up using them for a second factor. But maybe I’m missing something. What’s regretable about the trend?

It puts identity in the hands of the tech monopolies, and requires you to carry a de facto tracking device in order to be able to use anything requiring a login.

I’m not sure how printable backup codes work with TOTP—are they somehow derived from the private key/seed stored to generate the codes? Or are they a set of out-of-band one use passwords? What I’m getting at, can you have a paper backup if you lose your yubikey?
