The serious Constitutional threat is an executive branch that doesn't obey Congressional subpoenas, but for whatever reasons House Democrats decided not to fight that battle in court, and instead went hat in hand to the Senate, which has no interest in pursuing the point.

The American voter has spoken out loud and clear about impeachment. "Meh," they said. Let's go win some elections instead! Release the Senate Four, so they can go finish campaigning in Iowa!

I think it's significant that Bernie, Buttigieg, Biden and perhaps others are all campaigning in Iowa over what a distraction impeachment is from real issues. Get senators on the record with bad votes and move on. Last thing we need is the Senate hosting a Death Walrus book tour.

Just hazarding a guess here but it may be related to the whole "it's not illegal if the president does it" line of thinking which is directly against the constitution where on paper he's just some random public servant

Similarly, the Roman Senate, under the emperors, never formally gave up the power that it hand under the Republic. They just stopped using it.
