I remember writing postcards to Iowa voters for Howard Dean back in the day. Not real convinced that did anything either...but it did feel like I was helping!

This has been studied extensively, turns out volunteer phone banks generate 1 vote for every 35 successful contacts, on average. Commercial phone banks are much worse, and robo calls don’t work at all.
