Yesterday I attended a second town hall with Steve King, the white nationalist congressman from IA-4. This thread is for anyone interested in the details of how such a politician interacts with constituents, and the question he gets. Things were very different in Sioux City!pic.twitter.com/QUYBFAnMkx

The thread from the previous town hall is here: https://twitter.com/Pinboard/status/1220373334480736258 …. Again as a disclosure, I fundraise for King's opponent. This thread is not intended to argue with King's political beliefs, but to describe the event and constituent issues covered in mind-melting detail

The event was held in the Ho-Chunk Centre in downtown Sioux City, owned by the economic development corporation of the Winnebago Tribe, and a considerable portion of it would be devoted to Winnebago tribe politics and land rights. But I'm getting ahead of myself!pic.twitter.com/UxPiUXCWlw

Where in Clear Lake he had led with September 11, here King opened this event talking about flood control (the city last flooded in March 2019) . He pledged to review the Army Corps of Engineers plans for the entire Missouri Basin. The rest of his opening remarks were unchanged:

King was optimistic on trade agreements, including the USMCA and Phase 1 of the China deal, expressing relief that there would be less Canadian dumping of dairy products in the US. He repeated anecdotes about regular phone calls with Trump, and a chance encounter with John Thune

King also mentioned a trade agreement with Taiwan—"you have to eat a lot of sushi to get that done". He explained how the "Red Chinese want to come across [the Taiwan Strait]. I can see it in their eyes". But if they tried, they'd see "something far worse than in Hong Kong."

He spent some time here talking about impeachment. Democrats have been trying to impeach since November 9, Mueller was part of a deliberate strategy, the accusations against Trump (abuse of power and obstruction of congress) are nowhere defined in law, amount to not liking him.

On obstruction of Congress: "he was impeached for not making it easier for people to impeach him." Laughter from the room at that. Pelosi's demands about Senate trial conditions where a bigger quid pro quo than anything the President is accused of. Here King stopped for questions

The first question was about floods on Perry Creek, which the questioner felt was being ignored in flood management. King talked about his preference for dams upstream for local flood control, rather than widening the channel. Will push for this when meeting Corps of Engineers.

Second question was on transparency in FICO scores. Questioner didn't understand why his wife had better credit, though he was the breadwinner, and complained there is no transparency or appeal. King asked for a single-page doc to bring to Kevin Brady on Ways and Means Committee

Here there is a parenthetical about King's theory of town halls. He doesn't know much on this particular issue, will study it; his job is to bring good ideas to D.C. from the district. With 435 districts doing this, "we can get some sunlight".

[My theory on King town halls, which are a new development for the congressman, is that he got spooked by almost losing to his town-hall addicted opponent in 2018. Must... fight... urge to polemicize here]

Third question—how much money has the Mueller investigation cost America? Here follows a deep dive into Strzok theory, scamming FISA courts, Loretta Lynch, just which agents were in the room questioning Clinton. I don't follow the answer, but the audience seems to.

King says he "asked a Dark Ops friend" what the odds were that A.G. Barr and John Durham would indict people for FBI persecution of Trump. He thinks the odds are good, but there are "still a thousand James Comeys in the FBI," a chilling thought for us all. Gotta check the drapes!

Fourth question:"How dumb do Democrats think we are?" Questioner argues that impeachment is all hearsay, faff. King answers that the problem is cultural, one of selective belief. "They first assign a motive, then look for a thread of any evidence to create a narrative in support"

King cites Jeff Sessions (whom King liked) as an example of Trump's authority to fire anyone he pleases, including ambassadors. The questioner quotes Hitler on "if you tell a big enough lie long enough, people will believe it" [this is not a Hitler quote].

Here King pauses and since we are guests in the Ho-Chunk building, takes a moment to talk about his friendship with Winnebago activist Frank LaMere, who recently passed. Winnebago lands were unjustly taken after a 100 year treaty, he's trying to get them back by act of Congress

Our host gets up to speak, gives a brief history of Winnebagos. Lived in Wisconsin, unjustly kicked out because of a Sioux uprising, after much hardship, starvation, death they fled down the river to the Omaha tribe. Corps of Engineers flooded their most valuable land in the 50s.

Our host applauds King because he "has the highest risk tolerance of anyone in Congress." King explains "I always want to correct injustice", and uses this moment to pivot to a discussion of how he was stripped of his committee assignments by Republican leadership.

King explains that only four members of Congress were ever stripped of committees, the three others were felons. No specific person has ever accused him of making disparaging, let alone racist, remarks. So how did an NYT reporter purportedly discover remarks no one else had seen?

He minimizes the impact of the lost committee seats. Used to be 2-2.5 hours of hearings a week, now he goes to the floor and gives speeches. With Pelosi as speaker, Republicans on committees only play defense. So this is the least disruptive time. But he still wants them back.
