I believe that it's very hard to evaluate your own writing with any kind of judgement, or not change your writing style to increase engagement, in a setting where you have constant real-time feedback about what people are reading (in some cases down to the paragraph).

Writing for the internet in a situation where you have real-time feedback is like living in a sitcom with a laugh track, or one of those Indian soap operas where every line of dialogue is followed by 12 smoldering reaction shots from the main characters. It's very unsettling

I think one of the pathologies of contemporary journalism is this instant feedback, and if I was the editor at a news outlet I would move heaven and earth to prevent writers from their seeing per-article numbers
