I had a long drive yesterday so I listened to the impeachment managers. Over and over, they asked senators to subpoena certain documents and witness testimony. This is the part I don't understand—didn't the House have the same subpoena powers? Why beg opponents to do it?

There’s a subtle difference. In a House impeachment inquiry, subpoenas start in a lower court if challenged. In a Senate trial, Chief Justice Roberts presides. Subpoena challenges go straight to him. He could resolve them in time for an election threatened by foreign meddling.

This is the reason. The House does not, in fact, have the same subpoena powers. Trump could still defy them, but there would be no way to hide behind a pretense of waiting for the court to decide things.

It sounds like they do have the same subpoena powers, but legal appeals are expedited in the Senate case

If you define the power only as “issuing”, then yes. The House has to wait for it to be appealed all the way to the Supreme Court. During the Senate trial, John Roberts is already sitting there.

Lower courts may also drag their feet on House subpoenas.https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2020/01/courts-slow-trump-decisions-deliberate.html …
