Hey Pinboard fans who are designers, I'm going to monkey with the site a bit so it looks okay on phones. My CSS is several years out of date and every six months it seems like there was a holy war about how to do it right. Can you point me to a good tutorial on modern approaches?

My stubborn criteria: * No frameworks or third-party cruft. First-party cruft only. * No javascript * No libraries. Just wholesome CSS best practices from scratch Thank you!

We should name a design method (I'd say framework, but ... ah ha!)... after you.

I think the advice for vanilla CSS hasn’t changed - mobile layout first, enhance where needed on larger viewports. CSS Grid and Fkexbox are excellent additions to the toolkit that can keep it even simpler by auto-laying out things at different widths.

I’m not a designer (or any type of coder), but I do overhaul personal web sites periodically, going back to the late ‘90s. I know it’s 3rd party cruft, but Sass made my last 2 designs WAY easier. And it generates normal CSS when you are done.

Depends if you are planning on doing it the retrofitting way or refactoring all the thing. Here is a goo reading about retrofitting tips to avoid spending to much time and help with the strategy https://webstandardssherpa.com/reviews/responsive-retrofitting/ … (some of the tools are dead fyi)

Just read Chris Coyier’s excellent guide to CSS Grid and you’ll be up to date (and never have to use a grid framework like Bootstrap again). https://css-tricks.com/snippets/css/complete-guide-grid/ …

Figure out SASS. It will make writing CSS easier. If you want to support IE11 you're probably best sticking with Flexbox: https://css-tricks.com/snippets/css/a-guide-to-flexbox/ … If you don't care about IE11 consider use Grid for layout: https://css-tricks.com/snippets/css/complete-guide-grid/ … Design from mobile first.
