CA wildfires burned 270,000 acres in 2019, the least since 2011. Deaths & structure loss were a fraction of the previous 2 yrs. That suggests the widespread preventive power shutdowns worked -- & CA should do more to prevent human-related ignitions. https://lat.ms/35rQsDN
The extreme wind events this year occurred in places (like canyon mouths) where cutting back trees isn't enough, unless you created corridors hundreds of meters wide around power lines.

The piece is pawalled: I was under the impression that the shutdowns were to prevent winds from causing contact between power lines and trees? Unless I'm missing something (certainly possible) I don't see why they'd need a swath wider than tree height?

*paywalled* Are wires sparking just blowing in the wind, without tree contact?
