The dynamic is that a columnist writes something intentionally provocative, and then anger twitter drives clicks to it, which rewards the publisher for the provocation and incentivizes them to publish more of that rather than anything better. Leaving this vague for future re-use.

... It is hard for us to imagine Trump admin doing anything helpful in these crises. So despair means skipping the columns. (In reality Senate does sometimes try to help if Trump is distracted.)

If the goal is to optimize clicks and other crappy surrogate measurements of wether people read the articles or not, to maximize advertiser income, then why not just become Fox News? They're way better at all of those things. Why be half-assed about it?
