This question that Bernie poses comes up in every American election, and the answer is invariably "no". Even in the record year of 2018, turnout for 18-29 year olds was an appalling 36%.pic.twitter.com/VwaxfiSLJv

Obama 2008 won by turning out millions of new young voters. Turnout among Americans age 18–29 was 51% and they voted D by a 35-point margin (compared to just a 2-point margin among voters age 30+).
In other words, the only time this century that Democrats won a trifecta at the national level, it was by turning out young voters.
McGovern turned out even more young voters than Obama, so I'd be careful with that framing (55.4% to 51.1%)
It’d be more accurate to say *Nixon* turned out more young voters, since the youth vote didn’t favor Democrats in 1972. It does now by huge margins.
It was about an even split, wasn't it? Which by McGovern standards is one of his best demographics.
But your point about age polarization is absolutely correct, and a weird feature of our era.
