Sinclair was also kind of an awful candidate. He had the instincts of a journalist, a belief in the fundamental virtue of the electorate (never a good idea in US politics) and never countered the devastating claim that his socialist policies would flood California with migrants

One view of Sinclair's campaign is that a worthy socialist with a winning message was kneecapped by an unscrupulous coalition of capitalists and right-wingers using media manipulation. A rival view is that moral crusaders are awful politicians. But the story is full of interest!
