Language Twitter: is there any language whose writing system is a greater disaster than Japanese? Since this is necessarily subjective, let's say by the definition of hours required for a fluent native speaker to master reading and writing.

If you're talking about fluent people.... the absolutely silly entirely silent conjugation rules in French mean that even up through the middle of high school people still get quizzed on basic spelling and conjugation. Imagine being quizzed on past tense when you're 16!

Yeah, written French that ignores those rules and more closely resembles the spoken language is almost indecipherable. We are all beaten into submission without even realizing how much we suffer
