Language Twitter: is there any language whose writing system is a greater disaster than Japanese? Since this is necessarily subjective, let's say by the definition of hours required for a fluent native speaker to master reading and writing.

As a foreign learner it has consumed a lot of my time, so I get it. But after observing my kids learn it and witnessing the fact that no one in Japan has any problem with it at all, I’m not so sure any more about how insane it is.

Another interesting thing is that I have no alternative to propose. Writing everything in romaji or kana is horrendous. The amazing trick of languages like English is the use of spaces to separate words. Not always obvious where spaces might belong in Japanese.

It’s not obvious to a non-native speaker looking at a string of kana, but it wouldn’t be too hard to define rules for spacing. Some Japanese foreign language texts do this in the beginning. E..g, わたしのなまえはアナベルです。 わたし の なまえ は アナベル です。

Do they actually spend more time than American schools do on reading, writing, spelling, and vocabulary?
