Also, when did faux Rodchenko become the mandatory font for any graphic design that mentions Russia?

I have a mild obsession with two things: restaurant signs that feature an animal carving or otherwise serving itself, and fonts that pretend to be from another writing system. Here's a bunch of Russian faux-Arabic fonts (they all say the same thing, 'fonts in Arabic style')pic.twitter.com/1tmBX0uJuj

Here are some attempts to make Russian look like Japanese (text says 'Japanese font').pic.twitter.com/kAVWUycTbE

Here is Ye Olde Katakana, the Japanese syllabary written to resemble Gothic miniscule. (https://feitclub.tumblr.com/post/82867586989/its-a-katakana-font-named-%E3%82%B4%E3%82%A6%E3%83%A9-designed-to …)pic.twitter.com/7P9MFUyAzd

Here's a font designed to break the minds of Japanese readers by looking way too much like Katakana. This is similar to how Я and И in fake Cyrillic fonts parses as 'R' and 'N' to people who don't read Cyrillic, but makes it really hard on those who do. https://www.sbs.com.au/popasia/blog/2015/11/11/font-confuses-japanese-speakers …pic.twitter.com/WyR2BCZvp4

PIX Symbols Faux Japanese Regular is a similar idea, but mixes hiragana and katakana just like the cruel Japanese writing system itself. https://www.fontsplace.com/pixymbols-faux-japanese-regular-premium-font-download.html …pic.twitter.com/tgqZskQ0Gm

These are just called "fonts in Eastern style". Four are faux Arabic, but the fifth is an awesome example of faux Hindi Cyrillicpic.twitter.com/7bNlBgszxE

I'm curious about other examples like these faux fonts that are a low-pass filter for knowledge. Normally, the more you know, the easier it is to do things, but in these scripts knowing the language makes it impossible to read with the speed and fluency of a non-speaker.

Further poking around reveals a l33t-speak like way of writing Japanese that uses Cyrillic letters and all kinds of punctuation. Gyaru-moji!https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyaru-moji

Martian Language (吙☆魰) is a similar phenomenon in written Chinese:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martian_language …

So one term of art for these things is apparently "simulation typefaces". I would love to have more examples of them for non-latin scripts (like Arabic calligraphy pretending to be Chinese characters)pic.twitter.com/5cJSEqUMVe

Sini is a Chinese calligraphic form of Arabic script. It's not really part of the pattern here (since it's entirely legible Arabic, just done with Chinese tools and techniques), but it's too cool not to mention here. https://mvslim.com/this-is-sini-a-chinese-islamic-calligraphy-form-of-the-arabic-script/ …pic.twitter.com/6PTQ9ULft2
