After the 2016 election, we had it beaten into our heads with report after report from white towns across the rust belt that Democrats lost because they alienated these voters. It's just not true. Even Obama never won a majority of the white vote.

I think those reports were grounded in the fact that non-college-educated white voters have moved significantly to the Republican party in the last ten years, and those numbers that shifted are greater than Trumps' victory margin in upper midwest states.

Of course, one tragedy of a close election is that *everything* becomes the reason your candidate lost. But the move rightwards by non-college-educated whites is a real thing.
