I think the editors mostly spike those stories. NPR has actually run a "left on the cutting room floor" segment from its foreign correspondents this week and the BBC's "From Our Own Correspondent" typically occupies that middle space.

how old are these reporters? in my experience, one problem is that almost no one young and intrepid can actually get a job as a “foreign correspondent” anymore

Tepid take: foreign press core is very expat like and won’t set outside the “compound”. There are exceptions to this but I feel that’s almost generational :(
