As the climate change crisis deepends, there will be an interesting political divide between countries like Australia, which have no hope of salvaging "normal" without decades of net-negative emissions (a fantasy right now), and countries where it doesn't feel too late to act.https://twitter.com/TwoPaddocks/status/1208207260477882369 …

Australia. This is the road between Canberra and the Coast I think yesterday. The idea that it is somehow not right 'to talk about #ClimateChange at this difficult time' is frankly convenient bulllshit. Of course. What Maciej assumes however is that both the activisim and resistance to it are entirely about local concerns. The main concern of climate activists in AU is concerned with policy on coal and gas exports, and participation in global agreements to allow...

countries like India to increase their energy consumption without having to rely on our fuel. This was I think the main thrust of transferring tech in the Paris agreements to offset costs for developing nations to jump straight to renewables.

Sadly, conservatives and pragmatic Labour have clung to a fear of not realising royalties, as well as possible impacts on employment (i.e. Central Qld). Just as the fires are not causally linked to any single shipment of coal, most people understand that ...

taking action will not abate the fires, but is about participation in, and even leadership in global efforts to mitigate as much harm as possible.

Couldn't agree more. The recent legal action in the Netherlands is the start of something probably inevitable. It won't work in the US, but rulings from the Judiciary in Australia, the UK and elsewhere (even India) may ultimately curb political, and corporate complacency.
