As the climate change crisis deepends, there will be an interesting political divide between countries like Australia, which have no hope of salvaging "normal" without decades of net-negative emissions (a fantasy right now), and countries where it doesn't feel too late to act.https://twitter.com/TwoPaddocks/status/1208207260477882369 …

Australia. This is the road between Canberra and the Coast I think yesterday. The idea that it is somehow not right 'to talk about #ClimateChange at this difficult time' is frankly convenient bulllshit. (I understand that it's pretty much too late to act everywhere, but I'm talking about political perceptions, which will always lag the reality by a few years.)

We might face a situation where one cohort of countries invests in immediate global cooling schemes (like setting off volcanoes or artificial nuclear winter) while the rest of the world is still trying to fit itself into a shrinking carbon budget via diplomacy and treaties.

Say a radically green government was elected in Australia tomorrow. What could they realistically do to address the climate crisis? Petition India not to industrialize further? The separation of cause and impact, both in time and space, will make this issue terrifyingly divisive

There's been a quiet assumption in some circles that eventually we'll wake up that the climate crisis is real, and then the world will act in concert to solve it. But I think the growing impact is more likely to create divisions than heal them.

There was a similar elite consensus after World War II that nuclear weapons must invariably lead to world government, because the only alternative would be global annihilation. I see a lot of the same wishful thinking about climate change now.

We're still in a bit of a honeymoon phase where good outcomes are possible, if everyone acts right now and there are major policy changes. As time passes and the set of probable futures becomes more harrowing, uglier forms of denialism will gain in appealhttps://twitter.com/Priest/status/1208355413168508929 …

Part of the anger at the moment is that our government refuses to acknowledge the issue of climate, is heavily financed by coal and not taking any action at all. We're upset about now but we're angry about our possible future.

If anything, politics in Australia is going the other way. We had a relatively radical (for the time) emissions trading scheme legislated in 2011 which showed some signs of domestic effectiveness, but it was repealed by a conservative govt in 2013 and it's only regressed since.

Well we could stop exporting coal. You make a reasonable point, but Australia can have an impact beyond reducing its own emissions.

Yeah, that's a good point. But then it might end up creating demand for shitty Polish brown coal instead, and the denialist regime there would be happy to sell more of it. It's so hard to play out the possible scenarios, or for one country to have an impact for the better.

Immediately ceasing mining and exporting coal would be the big thing.

Clean technology can out compete legacy tech. If you can push the economy in that direction, industrializing India doesn’t have to be all coal and smokestacks, because solar etc could be more economical. Countries can change ind policy to make this better/faster/cheaper
