Darin LaHood was one of 19 state senators to vote against a ban on gay conversion therapy in 2015. He's a cogressman now and Google, a vocal corporate supporter of #pride, gave him a $2,500 donation on November 12.pic.twitter.com/g4UDxzKDea

Defending a proposal to cut access to the SNAP program (food stamps), Texas Rep. Jodey Arrington cited the biblical passage Thessalonians 3-10. "We give you this rule, 'If a man will not work he shall not eat.'" Google gave him $2000 he didn't work for on November 12.pic.twitter.com/jaLqwyMf9E
Senator Mike Braun is a staunch opponent of same-sex marriage, and Google is a vocal #pride sponsor. Yet this unlikely pair found each other, and Google has made things official with a $1000 campaign donation... in a year Braun isn't even running! He's up in 2024.pic.twitter.com/wHETvjze0p
These donations are made out of paycheck dedutions. If you work at Google, you can go down this list of donors and ask your coworkers if they realize where their money is being spent. Just be careful; Google has fired 5 people for organizing since November https://docquery.fec.gov/pdf/680/201912209166686680/201912209166686680.pdf …
More from the filing: Rep. Jackie Walorski pushed to have a discriminatory "religious freedom" amendment tacked on to a 2016 defense bill, and voted in support of Trump's transgender ban. Google gave her $3000 on November 12.pic.twitter.com/SsNn3xO0Jx
Republican hardliner David Schweikert famously used queer-baiting tactics to secure his contested primary in 2012 (see excerpt), and has been struggling to fundraise this year. Google helped him out with $2,000.pic.twitter.com/8L9tJ3Dqwp
You can't boycott Google (you're not the customer), you can't avoid their monopoly power, Congress won't regulate them, the employees refuse to organize, the founders have left, and the company's message for us each month with these egregious donations is simple: "sit and spin".
At least one brave employee tried to get Google cut from @sfpride this year over their political donations to overt homophobes and the ongoing role of YouTube as a platform for bigotry. Guess who got fired right before Thanksgiving, and who is still a keystone @SFPride sponsor.
There's so much residual fondness for Google, especially among employees. It's like if they replaced the singer in your favorite band with a Pfizer executive; you'd buy another couple of albums out of desperate hope. But people need to look the situation honestly in the face.
I'd still rather have folks on the inside who care enough to push for change.
Google has proven very effective at making people think like they're pushing for change when they're just being placated.
Sure, but what's the alternative? Google changed course on Maven after internal pushback. Maybe not fully, but more than they would've if it had been up to execs. Would we prefer for them to be entirely staffed with amoral yesmen like Uber was/is? https://theintercept.com/2019/03/01/google-project-maven-contract/ …
